The students of Sathya Nikethan Special School, which is part of the charitable services by Sathyam Ministries, received a vocational training course in Envelope Making. Envelope making is a widely accepted vocational training course across India. Evidence based studies suggest that trainings, which involve an emphasis on cognitive prerequisites and performance hierarchy, such as envelope making for persons with intellectual disability can be helpful in providing increased coordination between their vision and motor activities.
Most of the students in the school are suffering from intellectual disability. The therapies and special education provided for the students are based on each one’s needs. The improvement in their concentration, coordination as well as their motor skills is given equal importance at the school. All the students were enthusiastic in learning this new skill. With this continuous training, now they are able to make envelopes of different sizes of their own. This course has helped them in acquiring a new skill that is valid to get them into employment opportunities.
We believe that these vocational activities taught to people with intellectual disability can enhance their quality of life. They can be independent on doing works that are focused on their visual-motor skills. These kinds of abilities are prevalent in straightforward manual tasks that are frequently chosen for the training and rehabilitation of mentally handicapped people. We work for the holistic development of every individual in our organization.
